Scotland seeks to be part of a more socially just world in which people care for the environment, creating human and planetary wellbeing. Meeting these aspirations is a responsibility for us all.
Scotland should be a place where all people can satisfy their basic needs and enjoy a good quality of life, and from which together we can support positive global change. The Sustainable Development Goals – also known as the SDGs or Global Goals – were adopted in 2015 to provide a global framework to achieve change, from tackling poverty and social inequality, to addressing climate change and biodiversity loss, to pursuing decent work for everyone.
In the last decade world events have impacted progress towards these aspirations, including international conflict and eroded trust in politicians, economic uncertainty and unknown effects of AI, extreme weather events and species extinction. However, this current context has also highlighted the need for a holistic framework and the importance of working towards greater equity for all, to improve wellbeing and reduce our planetary impacts.
What is Sustainable Development?
“Sustainable development is development that recognises the rights and wellbeing of people and nature in Scotland and globally; without compromising those of future generations and places”
Sustainable development is a concept with a long and complex history before and beyond the SDGs. It is centred around the rights of people and nature, recognising that social justice and ecological integrity are interdependent, and bridges all disciplines and sectors.

In Scotland
Many of us know first-hand that poverty, hunger, inequalities and other social injustices have increased across Scotland and how these also impact environmental action.
Understanding and tackling these inter-related issues at home is key to a more positive future.
Globally
The SDGs act as a guideline for action for all countries, with the ultimate aim of saving the planet and ensuring that all people in it live free from poverty and deprivation.
We need to accelerate global cooperation and innovation to build a more equitable, sustainable, and resilient world for all.

“Our vision is for Scotland to be a world leader in sustainable development.
Our mission is to make Scotland a more sustainable nation by facilitating collaborative action towards the SDGs.”
